AIKYAM

Intergenerational Living

BEN HARRISON I PRAGYA SALHAN

Mission

‘Aikyam’ is a Sanskrit word for Oneness and harmony. The project aims to promote healthy living for seniors in Calgary by creating a socially inclusive housing facility that offers interaction with the younger population and opportunities to work while contributing to the community. Also, to increase social ties among the residences, provide a sense of identity and wholesomeness, and foster relationships.

Unit Design

The design incorporates features to make it usable for people with a wheelchair or walker. Wide hallways, as well as wide pocket doors have been used instead of normal swing doors. A standard wheelchair is 24-27” wide, in order to accommodate a wheelchair, we made all the doors 36” wide.

Kitchen windows face the circulation space, allowing the residents to interact with one another from inside their units.
