VISION

The purpose of EvoModule is to bring social and economic equity to the City of Calgary. The proposal reimagines affordable housing, establishing a modular and inclusive housing system that is able to adapt to the changing needs of inhabitants over time.

CRITICAL STATEMENT

Collective modular smart housing is proposed, to devise a housing system that may meet the needs of inhabitants, and evolve organically over time. At the core of the project is the design of smart affordable housing and the expansion of the Riverwalk into the city through an urban park, to create housing that bridges the gap between income levels, and enhances the well-being of those that live, work, and visit the city, through the incorporation of AI technologies that help create efficient units, adapting to the changing needs of residents, and life circumstances. Standard 6mx9m modules can be transformed from within, and adapted, units expanded with 3mx3m modular additions. Individuals can have ownership and personal agency in their private dwellings, and benefit from co-collective programs within the building design, in spaces such as collective gardens created from the “voids between modules.” Each unit has access to nature through semi-private garden terraces. The surrounding urban park, integrated within the housing complex, bleeds out from the Bow River, extending into the urban core, bringing biodiversity into the city, and providing residents with the biophilic benefits of living with nature. The units hover above the park, ensuring the ground level is given back to the pedestrian by way of the seamlessly flowing park. The goal of the project is to develop a sustainable city expansion plan in which both housing and urban park work synergistically to provide clean-affordable energy and provide inhabitants with a greater sense of place and more purposeful connection to their communities
